Selected Poems From the Divani Shamsi Tabriz
By Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi
Edited & translated with an introduction, notes & appendices by Reynold A. Nicholson
Language: English and Persian
Best Quality Edition | Imported Offset White Paper
The Divani Shamsi Tabriz is a masterpiece of Persian literature and a classic work in the history of Sufism. With his Masnavi it is one of the key writings of the renowned mystic poet Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi (1207–1273).
REYNOLD ALLEYNE NICHOLSON (1868-1945) is considered one of the authorities on Rumi. His edition of the Masnavi-ye Manavi is a standard. He wrote more than a dozen works on Rumi and Sufism. A.J. Arberry describes him as "the perfect scholar, so devoted to his books that he blinded himself by reading, so modest and humble that he was totally unaware of his greatness." In Selected Poems from the Divan Shams Tabrizi, Nicholson has selected his favorites from Rumi's love poems.
Professor Nicholson's English translation of selected poems from the Divan of Rumi was first published in 1898, and is often credited as being the best-known version in a European language. It is suitable for scholars and students of Persian literature and for all those interested in the mystical literature of Islam. The Persian text is printed with facing English translations, and there are copious notes, a lengthy introduction, appendices and indices.
